Using the World Wide Web

The World Wide Web, also known as the Web, is a data network that includes computer networks, extranets, Web sites, email servers, and various other information systems that are interconnected by Uniform Resource Identifiers, which can be identified by links, and are located over the Internet. The term “Web” was made popular by the USENET in the early 1970s. Since then, the Web has been used by companies everywhere as a method for sharing information, communication, and even file sharing. One of its primary purposes is to replace the traditional file server computers that were used for network activity, as well as for maintaining network security.

A web application may include one or more browsers. These browsers work together to display web pages and associated information to the user’s computer screen. Web browsers use a common infrastructure, called a web server, to interact with one or more web servers, which contain web application programs. Some web browsers, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, have additional features such as toolbars and extra security features. Others, such as Google Chrome, do not have these added features.

A web application allows a user to browse websites, which usually refers to websites that the user is connected to. Each time the user browses a web page, a temporary files, called cache, are kept on the user’s computer. This temporary files store most of the images and text that the user may want to view later. The cache also saves settings and information about each web page that the user has visited. These data and settings are then stored in the user’s computer’s hard drive, or in other web browser storage areas.

The Internet began as a worldwide information system using the ARPANET, or Application Remote Area Network, an intranet system that began operating in 1993. Since then, the world wide web has become widely used for business, research, education, news distribution and just about any other purpose that one can imagine. Prior to the World Wide Web’s existence, the first browser needed to visit websites was the Windows DOS based internet browser, referred to as MSN browser.

Today’s modern web browsers can be accessed via the world wide web using a personal computer and the internet connection. One of the primary purposes of the web is to create and maintain online accounts for social networking websites. For instance, Facebook and MySpace are two of the most popular social networking websites on the internet. Both of these websites allow members to create an online account that can include pictures, videos, personal messages and other types of content that members can discuss with other members.

If you want to sign up for a social news website, such as Facebook, there is not much you need to do other than select a realm that interests you. Once your account has been set up, Facebook will request information from a web server in order to create your profile page. The web server will provide a web page that is used for a member’s profile page, containing links that you will link to from your social networking websites user interface.
