The World Wide Web, also known as the Web, is basically an information network in which various web resources and documents are identified through Uniform Resource Locators, that can be interconnected through hyperlinks, and can be accessed over the Internet. The term “Web” is generally used to refer to any kind of network. The Web includes several networks such as intranet, extranet, extranetwork, intranetwork, and extramural. One of the most prominent international networks, the Internets Network, is essentially a global system of interconnecting computer systems that provide access to Internet services. The Web is considered a part of the corporate intranet in that it allows companies and organizations to exchange files, programs, emails, etc.

The World Wide Web has many uses such as business, education, shopping, research, news, online banking, social networking, telecommunications, file sharing, telecommuting, image viewing, gaming, and personal web pages. One can do almost anything on the World Wide Web. There are literally millions of websites on the web, making it impossible to view all of them. To make things worse, most people do not have their computers hooked up to the World Wide Web at all; so when they do get connected, it is usually through a wireless connection or through wireless devices such as smart phones and hand held devices.

As with any technological application, there are issues that have been noted with the Web and these include usability, security, spam, security, and usability. Security and spam issues affect the entire network. Because the Internet is made up of several networks, it is difficult for the user to tell the difference between an innocent website and one that is malicious. Additionally, the Internet itself does not regulate content, so spammers have found ways around certain Web standards and techniques. This has led to a negative public perception of the web, and many businesses have decided to set up their own company on the web.

With so many websites on the web, the average person is bombarded by advertisements on a daily basis. The web browser was not designed to be a marketing tool; in fact, the first websites were not designed for marketing. However, the web has changed drastically over the years, and many companies still find the need to market through the web. A dynamic website can be very appealing to potential customers, especially if the product or service that is being offered can be downloaded quickly and easily.

Another issue that the web designer will need to address is usability. A great deal of the design process involves creating user interfaces that are easy to operate and that will appeal to all users of the web. One example of this is the navigation bar of a web page. In the past, users had to learn HTML in order to gain access to the bar or other features, but now, a simple drop down menu or button can suffice. Using the internet, users are more likely to stay on a site longer because they are able to complete tasks with the web browser easier.

For web designers, the internet presents endless opportunities. As the world becomes more technologically advanced, business owners must think about how they can advertise and promote themselves to increase sales. Using the web to increase traffic is one way to do this, but emotional design techniques are also an option. These methods can be used to create websites that are visually appealing while still providing the information that the customer is looking for.
